What We Do
Building awareness, supporting families, and creating pathways to a brighter future for children with autism in the Congo.
The Context: Raising a Child with Autism in the DRC
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, autism spectrum disorder is widely misunderstood and profoundly stigmatized. Access to diagnosis is extremely limited — most families never receive a formal evaluation at all, leaving children without the interventions that could transform their development. Specialized schools, trained therapists, and autism-aware educators are scarce in all but the largest cities, and even there, costs are far beyond what most families can afford.
The burden falls hardest on mothers. When a child presents with behaviors associated with autism, cultural explanations often blame the mother — she is accused of witchcraft, of moral failure, or of bringing a curse on the family. Mothers of children with autism (CwA) frequently face isolation, rejection by their communities, and abandonment by partners. They carry the weight of caregiving alone, with no professional support and no peers who understand their experience.
For mothers who do seek help, options are vanishingly few. There are no peer support groups, no respite care, no culturally adapted family therapy programs. The choice many face is between keeping their child hidden at home or attempting to access a broken, under-resourced system. Autism Congo Initiative exists to change this reality — one family, one community, one generation at a time.

A MOTHER'S STORY
She Refused to Give Up
"When my son was diagnosed, I felt completely alone. In the Congo, people didn't understand — they blamed me, they feared him. My family told me to send him away. But I refused. Autism Congo gave us hope. They gave us a community. They gave my son a future."

Autism Congo's Vision
A world where every child with autism in the Congo has access to diagnosis, education, and acceptance — and every mother is supported, not stigmatized.
Raise public awareness of autism across Congolese communities — dismantling stigma, equipping families with knowledge, and training educators and healthcare workers to recognize and support children on the spectrum.
Provide direct support to mothers and caregivers through peer networks, resource navigation, and advocacy — ensuring no family faces the journey alone and every voice is heard.
Build lasting infrastructure for autism diagnosis, therapy, and specialized schooling in the DRC — partnering with local professionals and international organizations to elevate the standard of care for every child.
